I’m Max, a second year Mathematics student. I’m currently the Swing Group Representative and running for President on the next committee. I’ve taken part in ULMS since the first day of my freshers’ week in first year, playing piano in Big Band, Swing Group, Burnt Toast and Inglorious Brassterds, singing in Choir and Chamber Choir and playing boomwhackers in Whackestra. I’ve also become a Wind Band conductor and Choir accompanist which have both been great opportunities to get even more involved in the day to day running society.

Many of you will have heard about my musical experience prior to ULMS but I have also achieved a lot as Swing Rep. Together with the Big Band Rep and both ensembles’ conductors, I organised the ULMS at the Gregson Jazz Night, which was a huge success. The equivalent concert this year is taking place at the Storey to allow for an even larger audience. Last term, I worked alongside third parties to organise Swing performances at the Chaplaincy’s Ceilidh and Swing Dance event in freshers’ week and at Swing Dance’s Alumni Social Dance. I also visited potential concert venues in the Storey and St Thomas’ Church, allowing us as a society to make more informed decisions about the running of our concerts both on and off campus. As President I will need to communicate with other societies – notably LUO – as well as LUSU and other relevant organisations but this is a natural extension of the work I’ve already done on committee.

I have continued to improve my time management and organisational skills as a student ambassador and team member at the Fencing Club. The experience I’ve gained from these positions will allow me to be an effective President while preserving a healthy work-life balance.

In short, ULMS has been a highlight of my time at university so far and I’d love to improve the society for its current and future members with the role of President being the best opportunity for me to do so. I look forward to working with the rest of the new committee to achieve this goal.

Secretary

Isobel Wilks

Hello! I’m Isobel, a second-year Cybersecurity student and currently the Wind Band Rep. I play a variety of saxophones and clarinets across Big, Wind, Swing and multiple small groups. I have loved this past year on committee organising concerts, running socials and rehearsals, streamlining the Medici and Committee Cupboard, and implementing changes within the committee so I would love to keep doing it as your secretary.

When I ran for Wind Rep, I outlined two goals: find another performance opportunity for wind band and finally get I new bari sax – I’m happy to say I achieved both of these! Last term I coordinated with the Ballet Society to perform as a part of their showcase which was a brilliant opportunity to add to the roster. I also led the efforts to sell the unused instruments that had been sitting on the Medici shelves, using the funding to improve instruments and equipment that we regularly rely on.. For me, this was spurred by my desire to play a bari sax that works and I’m very happy with what our committee managed to procure!

Something else I’m proud to have achieved is changing the balance of the ensemble budgets. Previously, every ensemble received the same budget which led to a disparity in the purchasing power of each group – strings on most occasions could find public domain work with minimal printing costs, while most wind pieces were starting around £70. By shifting from equality to equity, it means wind band should be able to buy three new pieces for the year, which definitely helps the variety of repertoire. I’m passionate about ensuring the society funds are spent thoughtfully and fairly and I want to continue pushing changes in the right direction.

During the time we did not have an active technician, I was evaluating which instruments we did not need to keep and contacting the very long list of the places we could sell them. This combined with the experience I gained from over a year on the exec for the FemTech society coordinating events, managing the social media, and delivering presentations and workshops, has given me a strong understanding of the many facets involved in running a society.

Going into next committee, I want to continue making sure the exec functions effectively, including evaluating the new constitutional amendments and Events Coordinator role while also still enjoying all the music. I really love ULMS (so much so that I did the four-hour food hygiene course for you), and I want to be a part of ensuing everyone else enjoys it as much as I do!

Treasurer

Noah Meehan

Hi, I’m Noah, a third year Mechanical Engineering student and the current Small Groups Rep. I’ve been in ULMS since my first freshers’ week and have loved getting more involved in the society over my time in Lancaster, particularly enjoying my time on committee this year. I am an active member of the society, playing the saxophone in swing group, wind band, sax choir, and Inglorious Brassterds. During my time as Small Groups Rep, I have hosted successful small groups showcases and live lounge events and have overseen the formation (and re-formation) of multiple small groups.

I am running for the role of treasurer as I would like to take on more responsibility within the society, and because I believe I am a good fit for the role. I have good time management and organisation skills as well as a strong understanding of the whole society’s expenses and budgets. Also I excel at using spreadsheets (pun-intended). My involvement in lots of the society’s musical and social exploits makes me well-suited to be a part of the Directive Team and be able to make informed decisions for the benefit of ULMS – not just financially. I intend to be proactive in the role, working with the president and secretary to ensure a successful year which everyone on the future committee, and in the wider society, can enjoy!

Representative Team

Big Band Representative

Teoman Turgut

Hey all! I am Teoman (Teo), I am a 3rd year studying physics and astrophysics (dw I have 4th year upcoming year). I have been playing the guitar for 10 years. I am playing for big band, swing group (I also conduct swing!), and 7/6. I had previously been on committee for 2 years as technician and big band rep.

This year in big band, we added the Jazz Night concert to the calendar and hosted jazz jam sessions which I am very proud of. I would like to keep taking care of big band and jazz in ULMS. With my previous experience of committee, I will be doing my best for big band and ULMS.

Brass Band Representative

Leo Barnett & Erin Carlile (running as a pair)

Leo:

Hi, I’m Leo and I’m a second year astrophysics student. I joined ULMS in Freshers week of my first year, and since then I have tried to be as involved with the society as possible. I currently play in five ULMS groups: Brass Band, Wind Band, String Orchestra, Brass Quintet, and Whackestra, as well as having been Project Teach Music Coordinator on the previous committee. I play French horn, viola, and piano (with grade 8’s in all three) – and I also now play cornet.

Music has always been a very important part of my life – I was heavily involved with my music service back home, playing in seven different ensembles over my 8 years there (I joined my first aged 10), and performing in countless concerts. I have even returned to play for them multiple times since leaving. I was also very involved with the music department in my sixth form, where I did A-level music and played with multiple ensembles, including the pit band for our performance of The Addams Family.

I have thoroughly enjoyed being part of ULMS and being on committee for the past year, and I would like to help the society be run in the best way possible. Being in Brass Band especially has been one of the best parts of my uni experience so far, so I would love to have a bigger role in the band. My previous committee experience has given me valuable insights into how the society runs, as well as developing my organisational and administrative skills, which will continue to be valuable to me as a Brass Band rep.

Erin:

Hello. I am Erin and I am a second year English Literature and History student running for Brass Band Rep. I currently play baritone in Brass band and trumpet in Wind band, and I have experience with a wide range of instruments and playing styles.

Over the last 8 years I have been a member of several different types of ensembles, including a professionally competing Drum Corps band, a local brass quintet and the occasional pit band. During this time, I have been a music teacher, section leader and conductor on many occasions. Although I had very little experience with brass bands before I joined the university, I have knowledge of a range of instruments having started on guitar and bass in metal bands before moving through most brass instruments and being a soloist on trumpet, mellophone and baritone in my home band. This means I have lots of experience with planning and organising bands and music, as well as helping to set up concerts and rehearsals.

I joined the both the Brass band and the Wind Band in fresher’s week in my first year and have since been to every possible rehearsal. I would really like to take on a bigger role within the society, and I think I am a good fit for this role as I am organised, reliable, and keen to help.

Choir Representative

Georgia Essenhigh & Ellie Cartwright (running as a pair)

Georgia:

Hi, I’m Georgia and I’m a first year student studying MORSE (maths, stats, operational research and econ).

I would love to be choir rep because from a very young age I have loved to sing. At school, I was always a member of a choir, and have been lucky enough to sing at venues such as St Paul’s Cathedral, Festival Hall, the Sheldonian, and at the Llangollen Eisteddfod. As choir rep, I would look forward to helping organise choir events, and with Ellie we will be able to use our combined experience to ensure the continued success of the choir.

Ellie:

Hi, my name is Ellie and I am in year one studying physics and astrophysics. I’ve spent many years singing in school choirs, and it’s always been a big part of my life. A particular highlight of my singing career was when I did choir tours in both France and Belgium. The experience of singing somewhere so different was absolutely amazing. I’d really look forward to working with Georgia in this role, and together we hope to continue the great work of the choir, and ensure it is as enjoyable as I have found choir to be already this year.

String Orchestra Representative

Benjamin Gaywood

Hello everyone, I’m Ben. I study Computer Science and have been a member of ULMS since my first year. I conducted the string orchestra for two years, beginning in my second, and conducted LUO in my third. I have seen this String Orchestra grow and change shape a number of times, whilst always remaining a friendly and enjoyable space for people to escape their degrees. I began conducting out of necessity, but was soon in love with the gig. If selected to represent our string players, I would work the remainder of the academic year as an enthusiastic voice encouraging members to try their hands at conducting. I would reach out to string players in the wider music community to help bolster our ensemble and ensure the continued presence of this wonderful group after I (god-willing) graduate. I have little doubt that the string players at this university will ensure the next chapter for the string orchestra is bright, but it would be a privilege to ensure this is a certainty.

Swing Group Representative

Jasmine Hewson

Hello! My name is Jasmine and I’m a first year maths student, and I’m running for Swing Group Rep. I’ve been playing the saxophone since I was 10 (an instrument choice inspired by a lifelong obsession with the Simpsons), and I’m currently in Big Band as well as Swing Group. I would be a good swing group representative because I really love the ensemble and would be committed to ensuring it’s a fun, well-managed and active part of ULMS. I’m also very organised and diligent with my commitments, and I have a love and respect for jazz and swing music that I think would make me fitting for this role. I can be relied on to be proactive, friendly and enthusiastic, and I’m keen in particular to organise more frequent collaborations with Swing Dance Society. I really value the opportunities and community provided by ULMS and I’m eager to contribute in any way that I can to help the society thrive.

Wind Band Representative

Ethan Hilde

Hello, I am Ethan. I am in my third year here at Lancaster and I am studying Theoretical Physics with Maths. I joined the Wind Band on cornet/trumpet at the start of my 2nd year but was in the Brass Band the year before. I have played the cornet since I was 8 and the soprano cornet for many years too. I was part of my secondary school’s concert/wind band where there were lots of concert opportunities.

I would like to become the Wind Representative because I have loved being in Wind Band so far and being on committee this past year as the Brass Rep has given me skills such as confidence and planning that I did not have before which I can bring to this new role. Overall, I have greatly enjoyed my time as an ULMS member as well as the vast majority of my time on committee.

Thanks for reading.

Small Groups Representative

Marcus Branney

Hello,

I’m Marcus Branney (first year Comp Sci), looking to apply for the position of ULMS Small Group rep 2026 – I’ve handed in my application form to Noah (current Small Group rep) and my bio is as follows.

For four years I’ve been playing bass guitar, currently in the ULMS swing band, as well as my local Big Band before moving to university. Prior to bass, Trombone was my main instrument for 5 years, playing in local brass & swing bands, playing in pit orchestras, and competing in brass band competitions.

As well as being used to the consistency of weekly rehearsals and familiarity with band settings, I also have experience in choreographing my own bands. I formed a 5 piece in 2024, with responsibilities that included scheduling rehearsals, arranging sheet music, and tailoring shows to suit venues and requests.

Four other first years and I are also in the process of forming a new band, which may become a new ULMS small group down the line.

I believe my experiences will give me a good perspective to the needs of the various small groups in ULMS, and will allow me work with them for any help they may require.

I would love to get more involved with the society, to meet new people, and have an active role in great music.

I hope you consider this highly, I look forward to hearing back.

Thank you very much!

Marcus

Administrative Team

Event Coordinator

No nominations.

Publicity Officer

Eleanor Moore & Zahra Syed (running as a pair)

Eleanor:

Hey everyone! I’m Eleanor and I’m a 2nd year Computer Science student. I currently play the violin in strings, and I am looking to be one of your publicity officers for the next year!

I’ve had a blast being on committee for the past year as Strings rep and would love to keep contributing to the society. I’ve assisted with making posters, banners, and programmes and really enjoyed setting up the Strings Instagram account. I’m also keen to continue taking and/or processing photos for more concerts and events as that’s been one of my highlights of being on committee so far. Designing posters is something I’m really into and between Zahra and I, I think we’ll produce some really awesome looking ones over the next year!

If elected, I’d like to continue the brilliant work that the previous publicity officers have done with the Medici board and Instagram, perhaps think about posting more about the day-to-day of the society on the Instagram, such as snippets of rehearsals from each ensemble, and make some super snazzy posters!

I’m really excited to work alongside Zahra and hope that you’ll consider us for your publicity officers! 🙂

Zahra:

Hey everyone, I’m Zahra! I’m a second year Geography student and am running to be
one of your Publicity O?icers. I’ve been a violinist for the last 12 years and joined the
ULMS String Orchestra when I arrived at uni, it’s been a brilliant experience getting more involved this year!

I’ve played in groups, both small and large, for as long as I can remember and have had the opportunity to play in some amazing global venues like St. Heribert’s Cathedral in Cologne and Birmingham Symphony Hall. Music has always been very important to me, and it would be great to play a role in making sure all the talented people in ULMS are heard and appreciated.

Art has also been a big part of my life since I was young, so the requirements for this role suit my expertise perfectly. I’ve been a freelance artist and designer for the last 5 years and I’d love to put my skills to use. I’ve had plenty of experience over the years running my own professional social media accounts and it would be a privilege to help support our wonderful community in this way.

Social Secretary

No nominations.

PTM Coordinator

James Konefal

Hello, I’m James, a second year maths student, and I’m running to be the Project Teach
Music coordinator. I currently teach drums via PTM, and I play the cornet in the brass
band and the brass quintet.

I’ve played cornet since the age of 7, and drums since the age of 10. I spent 9 years
working through the Shepherd Brass Band organisation in York, from a back row cornet player in their academy band, to the front row of their championship section band. Last year I was the principal cornet of the ULMS Brass Band, and this year I’m the second solo cornet. I also currently play with Morecambe Brass Band on the front row.

I learnt drums all the way through to grade 8 in 2022, and played regularly in my
Church’s music group, though I hadn’t played as much in recent years; I’m grateful to
have got back into it through teaching via PTM. One of my students played a grade 2
piece with the backing track almost perfectly last lesson, after only a handful of
lessons, and we’re looking forward to starting work on a piece by Radiohead soon.

I’d like to be the Project Teach Music coordinator to get more involved with the society. As a naturally introverted person, regrettably, I didn’t go to any society socials last year, but I have been pushing myself this year, and so far I have enjoyed a quiz, the carolling bar crawl, and getting involved with small groups in the brass quintet. Since I’ve recently transferred onto the integrated masters programme, I’ve got at least 2 years more in Lancaster and I’d love to make the most of it. I’m aware that the PTM coordinator is one of the more flexible roles in the committee, and so I think it would fit well around my studies and other musical commitments.

Technician

Ben Evans

Hi!

I’m Ben, a first-year maths student, and I am rerunning for the role of technician.

I have played guitar for over 10 years, but I also play electric and upright bass in big band and baritone horn in brass band. Since joining ULMS on my second day in Lancaster, I have always been looking for more ways to be involved! I have loved being part of the committee for the last few months, alongside playing in various ensembles and small groups and being a PTM teacher. Needless to say, I am very involved with the society.

During my time as technician, I have helped to update and improve several areas. We have completed a full Medici inventory and identified instruments needing attention. I introduced better systems to prevent equipment clashes, and put measures in place to avoid repeat issues when things didn’t go to plan. I have also provided technical support and setup for every concert this year to ensure everything runs smoothly.

Looking ahead, I plan to work closely with the next president and treasurer to reinvest funds from our upcoming instrument sales. My plan is to balance essential repairs and maintenance, such as fixing the timpani, whilst also reinvesting money into equipment and instruments that benefits the society, such as a cornet, tenor saxophone, marching snare and improved live equipment.
