As is the nature of a University Society, every year we say goodbye to old friends, and welcome new faces. As a third year now (sob) my own time to say goodbye to Lancaster and ULMS is fast approaching – It’s strange to think that I’ve had my last freshers week as a student, and to think of all of the ‘last times’ that await me in the year ahead. However, enough doom and gloom for one post – The exciting thing about the start of a new year is all the new faces we get to welcome to the ULMS family!
In the spirit of being welcoming, Sunday Week 1 was the scene of this year’s Freshers’ Showcase/Concert. This was the opportunity for freshers and new members to be able to see the variety ULMS has to offer in its main ensembles. Each group performed for just a short while in order to give a flavor of what they’re all about. This was followed by a social in County Bar, complete with free pizza, giant Jenga and flip cup. The night seemed to go down well, despite a few initial problems regarding a lack of lights in the Great Hall, with there being a real buzz in County after the concert.
Friday Week 2 saw the annual Three-Legged Bar Crawl, where (ideally) freshers are tied by the leg to non-freshers, either by cable ties or by good old-fashioned gaffa tape, and take on the campus bars, ending with the traditional race from Bowland to County. The night was a huge success, with a big turnout and no (lasting) injuries!
Looking forward there is much to get excited about within the society. Applications have opened for MD for this year’s collaboration musical Fame, as well as applications for the positions of Publicity Officer and Project Manager. Several groups within ULMS are going to be involved with the University Fireworks Celebration on the 5th November, and our Barbershop group Specs Appeal are currently in great demand, even appearing on BBC Radio Lancashire last weekend. What’s more there are plenty more socials planned in what’s sure to be a fun filled term. We hope you’ll join us as we try to build on last year’s successes, and make this year ULMS’s best ever!
With that being said, here are some photographs from this year’s Freshers’ Showcase…enjoy!
